Was your Instagram hacked? Even if the attacker changed your email address, phone number, and password, you can still recover the account using Meta's official hacked-account portal and video selfie identity verification. Act quickly — the sooner you start, the better.
Recovery Steps for a Hacked Instagram Account
Go to instagram.com/hacked. This portal is specifically designed for compromised accounts and bypasses the need for current login credentials.
Select "My account was hacked." Enter your Instagram username or the email or phone number the account was originally created with.
Request a security code. Instagram will attempt to send a code to your original email or phone. If the hacker changed both, select "Need more help" to move to identity verification.
Complete video selfie verification. Record a short video selfie looking at the camera, turning your head slowly. Meta uses this to confirm you are a real person and match it against profile photos and facial recognition.
Wait for Meta's review email. After submitting video verification, Meta sends an email within 24–72 hours to the email address you provided. Follow the instructions in that email to complete recovery.
Revoke hacker access after recovery. Once back in your account: change your password, remove any email/phone the hacker added, enable two-factor authentication from Settings → Security, and review active sessions under Settings → Security → Active Sessions to log out all other devices.
What Not to Do
Do not pay anyone claiming to be Instagram support — Instagram has no paid recovery service.
Do not repeatedly try to log in — failed attempts can trigger additional locks.
Do not report your own account as fake — this is a separate process and does not help with hack recovery.
